simulation : the imitative representation of the functioning of one system or process by means of the functioning of another — Webster

FOLDOC: Free Online Dictionary of Computing, OneLook, Free Dictionary, Wiktionary

Roget’s II (, Merriam-Webster Thesaurus, Visuwords

Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system over time. The act of simulating something first requires that a model be developed; this model represents the key characteristics or behaviors of the selected physical or abstract system or process. The model represents the system itself, whereas the simulation represents the operation of the system over time. Simulation is used in many contexts, such as simulation of technology for performance optimization, safety engineering, testing, training, education, and video games. Training simulators include flight simulators for training aircraft pilots to provide them with a lifelike experience. Simulation is also used with scientific modelling of natural systems or human systems to gain insight into their functioning. Simulation can be used to show the eventual real effects of alternative conditions and courses of action. Simulation is also used when the real system cannot be engaged, because it may not be accessible, or it may be dangerous or unacceptable to engage, or it is being designed but not yet built, or it may simply not exist. Key issues in simulation include acquisition of valid source information about the relevant selection of key characteristics and behaviours, the use of simplifying approximations and assumptions within the simulation, and fidelity and validity of the simulation outcomes. — Wikipedia

SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. <br/>In this work we compare different implementations of two interatomic potential models, one the empirical Tersoff–Brenner and the other the semi-empirical tight-binding, to be used in the thermal transport study of silicon nanosystems. The calculations are based on molecular dynamics simulations. In the case of Tersoff–Brenner potential, two free software packages were used, while for tight-binding potential, an in-house code was developed. Both […]

SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. <br/>Development of Embedded Real-Time Systems is prone to error, and developing bug-free applications is expensive and no guarantees can be provided. We introduce the concept of Digital Quadruplet which includes: a 3D virtual representation of the physical world (a Digital Twin), a Discrete-Event formal model of the system of interest (called the “Digital Triplet”), which can be used for formal analysis as well as simulation studies, and a physical model […]

SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. <br/>In an emergency medical system, the locations of ambulance stations has a direct impact on response time. In this paper, two location models are presented in combination with the hypercube queuing model to maximize coverage probability. In the first model, the locations of free and busy ambulances are considered in the system states, and the hypercube model can be analyzed accurately. The model contains a large number of states, and cannot be used for […]

SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. <br/>In this paper, the effects of water on obstacles in dam-break flow for different angles of the inclined planes have been numerically examined. The presented computational data are compared with data from the experiment and computational simulation data of other authors. Good agreements between the obtained simulation results and measurement data demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the mathematical model and the numerical algorithm when reproducing […]

SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. <br/>A closed suction system is used to remove endotracheal secretions without interrupting the patient’s ventilation. Closed suctioning may reduce adverse effects associated with suctioning with, for example, decreased clinical signs of hypoxemia and limited environmental, personnel, and patient contamination. However, it is not clear whether ventilation is maintained during the procedure. We aimed to determine the effects of endotracheal tube (ETT) size, […]
