This is the time of year when the news is full of stories about things “of the year.” According to your interests, you may have already noted Time’s Person of the Year, AAAS’s Science Stories of the Year or the nominees for Academy Awards.
However, there are some yearly “selections” that get less play in mainstream media. For example, unless you are in a design profession, you may not have heard that Pantone’s “Color of the Year” is Living Coral. Here’s a tiny clip they released with the announcement.

Pantone’s “Color of the Year” may have a significant impact on color choices next year, but the biggest impact of their announcement seems to be that it inspires a plethora of other “Color of the Year” announcements.

I like Ace Hardware’s approach best. They invited customers to mix their own paint color and enter it to be “Color of the Year,” and the winner was Pineapple Cream Granita.
Pantone’s “Color of the Year” doesn’t just have an impact on interior design. The fashion industry also takes notice, and this can’t help but bring to mind Meryl Streep’s scathing cerulean monologue in Devil Wears Prada.
