Nutty Nature News

I’ve been updating the “nature” related pages on this site, so I’ve spent an abnormal amount of time perusing nature related sites for the last few weeks. Along the way I came across more than my fair share of odd nature stories. Many of them were viral, so you may have seen some of them before, but I bet you haven’t seen or heard about all of them. So, here’s a rundown of some of the most noteworthy, fun tidbits that I’ve come across.

First, today, there’s a story about birds going on benders.

A quick search on YouTube revealed that this isn’t even all that unusual.

Next, there was that seal that slapped a man in the face. Of course, the most unusual part of the story was that the seal used an octopus to do it.

Speaking of octopuses, did you hear about the scientists that got octopuses high on ecstasy? It was done in the name of research, and it turns out that the octopuses didn’t respond all that differently than humans.

On the invertebrates on drugs front, there was also a story about the owner of Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound in Maine getting lobsters high before cooking them.

I first saw this in a story from Boston.com.

Then I hunted down a video about it.

Of course, after that story went viral, it resulted in this follow-up story a week later about how the Maine Health Inspection Program cracked down on the restaurant for selling “adulterated” lobsters. The owner then claimed that she hadn’t actually sold the lobsters to customers, but she and her father had experimented with eating some “adulterated” lobsters themselves.

Now here’s something that falls a bit more clearly into the “humane” category. There’s this story about an injured turtle that got a Lego wheelchair.

A quick search of YouTube did reveal that it isn’t all that original, though. In fact, it’s appears to be about as common as birds on berry benders.

Another one from the “animals and tech” front was this video that pretty much speaks for itself (spoiler alert, “training” was involved).

Then there’s the story about a small town in Greece getting covered in spider webs. However, according to your news source, you may not have heard that it was due to frisky spiders.

Finally, no post like this would be complete without a fun cat video or a 360° video, so here’s a 360° video from Big Cat Rescue in Tampa that fits the bill nicely.

If you want to see some more fun “cat” videos there’s a Big Cat Rescue YouTube Channel that even has a 360 VR Playlist with some clips that are guaranteed to make you go Awwww … for a good cause!

I personally liked the one with the kittens, of course! 🙂

Rock n’ roll, Noise Pollution?

Is rock and roll noise pollution?

If you are a rock and roll fan, then you probably know that this is a question that AC/DC famously weighed in on in their song Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution (YouTube).

If you are a language or communication expert, rock and roll fan or not, you probably have a bit more nuanced response that might begin with the phrase “it depends” and end up including words like perspective and context.

But what do lady bugs think?

Your answer might be who knows … or cares?

Well, it turns out that somebody tried to find out, and the answer is surprisingly relevant as well as entertaining.

Here are links to the Newsweek story and the journal article mentioned in the video.

Population‐Level Manipulations of Field Vole Densities Induce Subsequent Changes in Plant Quality But No Impacts on Vole Demography (Lise RuffinoSusan E. HartleyJane L. DeGabrielXavier Lambin, Evolution and Ecology)

Personally, I found it funny that they singled out Willie Nelson as representative of the “not rock and roll” condition. I also couldn’t help but wonder if the ladybugs were just too busy dancing to eat 🙂

Seriously though, the study was actually about an important issue. There really is such a thing as noise pollution, and in some cases, it can be harmful to animals (including us). Here’s a link to an informative video about the impact of noise on humans.

It isn’t just us humans and other land animals that have a problem with noise. It’s a problem for animals in the ocean, too.

So, that study about ladybugs opinions on rock and roll had a point, albeit an odd one.

However, I’m still not convinced that rock and roll is noise pollution. I lean towards siding with AC/DC on this one, although I must confess to being more on the same page as Joan Jett.

I even tried to find a 360° video of her or someone else performing I Love Rock N’ Roll.

I had no luck, but I did trip over one of Cheap Trick performing at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Enjoy, or not, as you see fit 😉

Why Not Butterflies?

Now that the eclipse has passed, and we all survived with our vision intact (hopefully), it is time to get back to our regular news, right? Unfortunately, I’m not finding anything in my “go to” news feeds all that inspiring right now. Everything seems to range somewhere between the mundane and the terrifying, so I keep hearing the gist of J.K. Rowling’s refrain, as spoken by the character Ron Weasley in Chamber of Secrets. running through my head:

“Why couldn’t it be butterflies?”

Here’s a clip of the humorous scene for the uninitiated.

Why Can’t We Follow the Butterflies? (YouTube)

While I do tend to be what some might perceive as overly fond of butterflies, the specific reason that the line keeps popping into my head is because I keep wondering why my favorite YouTube Channel for 360° Videos hasn’t featured them yet. Animals in general have been honored with their own playlists, but the poor little butterflies have been neglected. That’s a shame, because there are plenty of nice 360° Videos about them.

So, in an attempt to remedy the situation, achieve a sense of catharsis and brighten other people’s news feeds a bit, here are links to five videos that I would include in the playlist.

Nabokov’s Butterflies Shelf Life (American Museum of Natural History, YouTube)

These are just my favorites. There are plenty more on YouTube, so you can flutter on there!

Animal Vision

What if you could see like an animal? Well, now you can!

Here’s a link to a 360° video that shows what it’s like to see as a cat, dog, insect, rat and snake.

How Animals See (BuzzFeed, YouTube)

There are even some augmented reality apps out there that go a step further and let you experience your own world “through the eyes” of animals (Android, iOS).

Is “animal vision” a killer app for AR? Probably not, but still, it’s pretty cool!

If you really get into this stuff, there’s a ton of “traditional” media about it.

For example, here’s a link to a video that covers the science behind how we know how animals like bees, reptiles, cats, fish and insects see the world.
