Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha (along with the hare and the pika). Oryctolagus cuniculus includes the European rabbit species and its descendants, the world’s 305 breeds of domestic rabbit. Sylvilagus includes thirteen wild rabbit species, among them the seven types of cottontail. The European rabbit, which has been introduced on every continent except Antarctica, is familiar throughout the world as a wild prey animal and as a domesticated form of livestock and pet. A study by the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP-CERCA) with the involvement of the UAB indicates that between 12.5 and 9 million years ago, in the Vallès-Penedès basin, rainfall was twice as high as it is today, and the climate was subtropical. The research has reconstructed the precipitation and climatic conditions of the past from fossils of small mammals found throughout the area. The research is published in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution.
